**Assistant Editor (English) — Volunteer**

**The Defence Horizon Journal is looking for another member of our international editorial team.**

Are you interested in defence and security affairs? Do you enjoy working with ideas and helping authors communicate complex arguments clearly? Can you edit English-language texts written by both native and non-native speakers while preserving the author's own voice?

If so, we would be happy to hear from you.

**Please note: TDHJ is a volunteer-driven journal, and this is an unpaid, pro bono position.**

Your role

As an
**Assistant Editor (English)**
, you will work with submitted articles across fields including security and defence policy, geopolitics and law, conflict and fragility, military science and its application, emerging technologies and weapons technology.

Depending on your interests and experience, your work may include:

- reviewing submissions and helping assess their suitability for TDHJ;
- editing English-language manuscripts for clarity, structure and readability;
- helping authors—particularly non-native English speakers—communicate complex ideas without losing their individual voice;
- checking arguments, sources and terminology where appropriate;
- working with authors and other editors throughout the editorial process; and
- contributing your own ideas to the further development of TDHJ.

We aim to publish work that is
**rigorous, evidence-based, intellectually honest and accessible beyond a narrow circle of specialists**
.

What we are looking for

Excellent written English is important. Previous professional editorial experience is welcome, but it is
**not essential**
.

More important to us are:

- curiosity and a genuine interest in defence and security;
- sound judgement and attention to detail;
- reliability and willingness to take responsibility;
- openness to constructive disagreement;
- respect for different professional, national and intellectual perspectives; and
- willingness to learn and develop as part of the editorial team.

Fluency in German is
**not required**
. Our working language is English.

We particularly welcome applications from people who may not yet have an extensive publication or editorial record but are eager to develop their skills.
**We value commitment, curiosity and willingness to learn more than a polished résumé.**

Who we are

**The Defence Horizon Journal (TDHJ)**
is an independent international platform for security- and defence-related scholarship, professional perspectives and strategic debate.

Our contributors and editors come from different countries, disciplines and professional backgrounds. We seek to connect academic research with professional practice and to make serious thinking about defence and security accessible to a wider audience.

TDHJ is built by volunteers. From submission and peer review to editing and publication, our work depends on people who contribute their time, expertise and ideas because they believe informed and open debate matters.

Why TDHJ?

The horizon allows us to look both forward and back. We examine emerging challenges and technologies while drawing lessons from history and professional experience.
